When the thing is not specific
un livre……..a book

un stylo……….a pen

to show one in some cases
Il y a un étudiant dans la salle………..There is one student in the room.

Sometimes it is used when we do not use indefinite article in English.
Ce sont des amis………….. They are friends.

In negatives we use the article de
je n’ai pas de stylo. ……No, I do not have a pen.

When we talk about a nationality, religion, or profession, no article is used
Elle est artiste……….. She is an artist.
